September 2013- Week 4

ORGANIZATION SKILLS
I would say that this week was the most effective week so far. I finished my final designs, painted them with watercolor, and did a few other things in planning. I also practiced my cake decorating buttercream skills at IPS.
COMMUNICATION WITH SUPERVISOR
This week, I didn’t communicate with my supervisor.
INFORMATION
This week, I have decided my final cake designs except for the Indonesia one.  I sketched and painted the designs. Then, I also planned out the materials and tools needed for each tier of the cakes, and listed them out. I also managed to finish the resource list, which made me go around Jakarta finding the materials this weekend. I then bought some lace at Toko Renda for my wedding cake. Lastly, I had another class with Pak Tukul and he taught me how to decorate an ombre cake. To pipe an ombre swirl, start from the middle with a shell tip, move the piping bag in a circle motion and pull away. Since we only had one color of buttercream, it wasn’t really ombre.

September 2013- Week 3

ORGANIZATION SKILLS
This week was very effective. I was able to gain more ideas through inspirations for my cakes and I began to sketch my designs.
COMMUNICATION WITH SUPERVISOR
This week, I didn’t communicate with my supervisor at all. Though however, I did talk to Ibu Catherine, as Mr. Patrick did not come to school the day of the PP meeting.
INFORMATION
This week, I spent most of my time sketching and gathering ideas from the things I have learned through the investigation process. The skills and technicuqes then are matched with the inspirations, and with creativity, I slowly designed each cake tier by tier. I completed two designs of the wedding cake, one of fairytale, one of Alice in Wonderland, and one of modern. Though however, these are not the final designs. The sketches are still black and white and little notes are still scattered around the sketches. I also asked different people, from teachers, friends, to family members about their opinion on my design. I will use their opinion to improve my designs if I feel like their recommendations are helpful. I completed the full bibliography of my sources during the investigate stage as well. I chose to only include fondant, royal icing, and gum paste decoration techniques in my designs as buttercream decoration techniques would not stay in shape as long as I want them to stay.

September 2013- Week 2

ORGANIZATION SKILLS
I would say that this week was effective in getting my final sources. Though however, I think this week could have been more productive.
COMMUNICATION WITH SUPERVISOR
I didn’t communicate with my supervisor at all.
INFORMATION
This week, I completed Zoe Clarke’s Elegant Lace Cakes cake decorating class on Craftsy. I learned a lot, especially in decorating wedding cakes with laces. The class also taught me how to make a corsage, apply the brush embroidery technique, combining applique, and the like. It was a very beneficial class because through that, I was able to get some inspiration about the wedding cake as a part of my product later. I also looked through some pictures for inspiration, and collected them in the thumbnails.

September 2013- Week 1

ORGANIZATION SKILLS
I would say that this week was a pretty effective week as I got a lot of information and inspiration for designs of my cakes.
COMMUNICATION WITH SUPERVISOR
I didn’t communicate with my supervisor at all.
INFORMATION
This week, I completed the context of my AOI. I also completed Joshua John Russell’s Modern Buttercream Piping class on Craftsy. Through his class, I was able to get information to design filigree, monogram, freehand Faberge, and damask cakes. I was also able to gain knowledge about royal icing on cake decorating. Then, I also started sketching the possible design of my first three cakes. The inspiration comes from mainly Batik, Wayang, and other Indonesian arts. As for the Alice in Wonderland themed cake, I am inspired by of course, Alice in Wonderland, and the theme “tea party”. Next for the modern style cake, I am inspired by Jessicakes’ class on Craftsy and going to do something like her cakes, mixed with a  little of Joshua John Russell’s techniques on royal.
